Weekly Update August 14, 2026
August 14, 2026
To: Solheim Employees, Residents, Family Members and Stakeholders
From: Sam Oden, CEO of Solheim Senior Community
As we move through the second half of August, summer is beginning to give us a few hints that cooler days are ahead. While we may be looking forward to the change of seasons, Southern California summer is certainly not over yet. Please continue to use your air conditioner whenever needed and remember to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Staying hydrated remains important even on days that feel a little more comfortable. If you need help operating or adjusting your air conditioner, or if it doesn't seem to be working properly, please let a Solheim team member know. We're always happy to help keep everyone comfortable and safe as we enjoy these remaining weeks of summer and begin looking toward fall.
One special way we'll enjoy the week ahead is with a local adventure. On Monday, August 17, at 12:30 p.m., residents will head to Vidiots at the historic Eagle Theatre in Eagle Rock for a special movie theater experience. The building itself has a wonderful local story: it first opened in 1929 as the Yosemite Theatre and later became the Eagle Theatre, entertaining generations of neighborhood moviegoers before eventually closing as a theater in the early 2000s. Vidiots, which began as an independent Los Angeles video store in 1985 and later became a nonprofit film organization, restored the historic theater and reopened it in 2023 as a movie theater, video store, and community gathering place. We're especially pleased to visit and support a fellow nonprofit that has invested in preserving a piece of Eagle Rock history while creating a vibrant cultural space for our neighborhood. Reservations are required, so please be sure to sign up if you'd like to join us. Other activities continue throughout the week, and residents and families can check the August calendar for all the details.
Looking a little farther ahead, we're getting excited for one of our favorite fall celebrations: the Eagle Rock Oktoberfest benefiting Solheim Senior Community, happening Saturday, September 19, from 5:00–9:00 p.m. right here at Solheim. The evening will feature live Bavarian music by Bavarian Stew, authentic German food, beer, and plenty of fun, all while supporting Solheim and the residents we serve. There are also Oktoberfest sponsorship opportunities available for families, friends, businesses, and community partners who would like to play a special role in supporting the event and Solheim's mission. To purchase tickets, learn more, or explore sponsorship opportunities, please visit www.solheimsenior.org/oktoberfest. Invite your family and friends and join us for the “Würst” party of the year!
Oktoberfest is also a fitting reminder of the long connection between Solheim and the Eagle Rock community. Solheim has been serving older adults here since 1923, when our community began in a 12-room house. Over more than a century, that original home has grown into today's full-care campus, but Solheim's mission has remained steadfast: providing abundant living to older adults in a caring, faith-based community filled with love, peace, dignity, and security. As we prepare to welcome neighbors, families, and friends to our campus again this September, we continue a tradition of community and hospitality that has been part of Solheim for generations.
We hope everyone has a wonderful week. Enjoy the last weeks of summer, stay cool and hydrated, and don't forget to mark September 19 on your calendar for Oktoberfest!
Masks for all visitors to our campus will be available upon request. For additional information, please visit our website at www.solheimsenior.org. Questions may also be directed to Tina Antypas at 323-257-7518 extension 225 or at tantypas@solheimsenior.org.
