As August comes to a close, summer is certainly reminding us that it is not finished yet! We continue to experience very hot weather across Southern California, and we encourage everyone to take extra care during these warmer days. Please drink plenty of water, take advantage of the hydration stations throughout campus, and limit unnecessary time outdoors during the hottest part of the day. If you are having any trouble with the air conditioning in your apartment, please let the Front Desk or your nursing staff know right away so we can assist.

While this heat may feel unusual, hot spells at the end of summer have long been part of life in Los Angeles. In fact, September has produced some of the city’s most memorable heat waves, including a September 1955 heat wave when temperatures in Los Angeles reached 110 degrees. More recently, Downtown Los Angeles tied a daily record of 98 degrees just this week. Thankfully, today we have air conditioning, hydration stations, and a caring community looking out for one another—so please take advantage of them!

As we prepare to turn the calendar to September, a new September Activities Calendar will be coming out soon. We encourage everyone to take a look and find something that interests you. Whether it is music, an outing, a class, a social gathering, exercise, learning something new, or simply spending time with friends, there are many opportunities to participate. Solheim’s mission is to provide abundant living for older adults in a caring faith-based community filled with love, peace, dignity and security, and abundant living means much more than where we live—it includes staying engaged, building friendships, discovering new interests, and finding joy and purpose in each day. ‍

Interestingly, that commitment to an active and fulfilling life has been part of Solheim from the very beginning. One of the committees established by Solheim’s first Board of Directors was a Music Committee. Among the earliest donations to furnish the original home was an organ for the parlor, and an organist traveled all the way from San Pedro each week to play for the residents. Women from Norwegian Lutheran congregations also provided musicians and vocalists. More than 100 years later, music and activities continue to fill our campus. The programs may have expanded considerably since that first parlor organ, but the idea behind them remains much the same: creating opportunities for people to connect, participate, and enjoy life together.

September also brings our Eagle Rock Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 19 from 5:00–9:00 p.m. Sponsorships are an important part of making this community event possible while supporting Solheim’s mission.
