The Solheim Book Group continued to join the celebration with a discussion of a book which was a bestseller one hundred years ago, in 1923, Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery.   CLICK HERE to see the list of the ten Bestselling Books of 1923.

Emily of New Moon is the first in a series of three novels about an orphan girl growing up on Prince Edward Island, being raised by her relatives at New Moon Farm after her father dies of tuberculosis.  Montgomery is also the author of the previously published and beloved Anne of Green Gables series.   Montgomery considered Emily to be a character much closer to her own personality than Anne, and some of the events which occur in the Emily series happened to Montgomery herself.

The book was one the readers in the Book Group were generally glad they had read.  The Book Group particularly appreciated the descriptions of nature and Emily’s awareness of and enjoyment of the natural beauty around her through all of her senses. We had a lively discussion about the revelatory “flash” which Montgomery has described experiencing herself through her life, and the phenomena of second sight and fever dreams which were touched upon in the novel.  We also had the great good fortune to better understand a critical plot element in Emily of New Moon, when a resident was able to describe her own childhood experience of falling into a well.

The Book Group will continue to read throughout this Solheim Centennial year books which were published in 1923 or were bestsellers in 1923.  We discussed various potential future book selections which have been identified as connected to 1923.  The readers are excited to be part of this very special Centennial celebration.  We were happy to welcome a resident reader attending the Book Group for the first time.

The Book Group has selected for its August discussion The Murder on the Links by Agatha Christie, first published in 1923.  The book is Agatha Christie’s second novel featuring Belgian detective Hercule Poirot.  An urgent cry for help brings Poirot to France.  But he arrives too late to save his would-be client, whose brutally stabbed body now lies face downward in a shallow grave on a golf course.  The mystery deepens as Poirot encounters witnesses and suspects with various motives, a rival detective arrives on the scene with his own methods and theories, and the investigation uncovers a second, identically murdered corpse.

The Book Group will meet on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Solheim Senior Community in the Private Dining Room.  All are welcome.  Please ask at the front desk for a copy of the upcoming book. And please join us even if you have not read or finished the selected book.  We always seem to have a lively general discussion or two!

Please join us in August as we celebrate Solheim’s 100 Years, and Happy Reading!
